What You Need to Know
Rhode Island's cannabis market is unlike any other legal state. With just 7–8 dispensaries serving the entire state, supply is constrained and lines can be long. The state offers significant employment protections for off-duty cannabis use — one of the strongest in the country — but enforces a zero-tolerance DUI law with no per se ng/mL threshold.
If you're coming from Massachusetts, be aware that transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal offense, even between two legal states. Buy in the state where you plan to consume.
Rhode Island has the fewest dispensaries per capita of any legal state. Plan ahead — check hours and expect wait times. Find dispensaries.
Employers cannot fire you for lawful off-duty cannabis use. Exceptions: federal contractors, safety-sensitive roles (24hr pre-shift), and CBA prohibitions. Read more.
Any detectable THC or metabolites = DUI for recreational users. Medical patients are exempt from metabolite-only charges. DUI details.
Cannabis purchased in RI cannot be transported to Massachusetts, Connecticut, or any other state. Federal offense regardless of legality in both states.

The Smallest State, The Biggest Per-Store Numbers
Rhode Island's cannabis market has generated $323 million in cumulative sales by early 2026, with approximately $120 million in 2025 ($97.9M recreational, $22M medical). With only 7–8 hybrid dispensaries splitting this revenue, each store averages roughly $17 million per year — the highest per-store figure in any legal state. The 33-license cap and slow expansion mean this concentration isn't changing quickly.
