Rhode Island Cannabis Possession & Purchase Limits

1 ounce in public, 10 ounces at home, and per-transaction caps on flower, concentrates, and edibles. Here's exactly what you can carry, store, and buy.

Recreational Possession Limits (Adults 21+)

Under the RI Cannabis Act, adults 21 and older have two sets of possession limits — one for public carry and one for home storage:

Location Product Type Limit
In Public Flower (dried cannabis) 1 ounce (28.35 grams)
Concentrates (wax, shatter, oil, etc.) 5 grams
At Home Flower (total stored) 10 ounces

The home storage limit of 10 ounces is notably generous compared to most states. Rhode Island recognizes that home growers (3 mature plants are allowed) may need to store harvested material, and the 10-ounce limit accommodates this.

Per-Transaction Purchase Limits

In addition to possession limits, Rhode Island caps what you can buy in a single dispensary transaction:

Product Type Per-Transaction Limit
Flower 1 ounce (28.35 grams)
Concentrates 7.7 grams
THC-infused edibles 830mg total THC

Note the asymmetry: you can buy up to 7.7g of concentrate per transaction, but you can only carry 5g in public. Plan accordingly — if you purchase the full 7.7g, transport it directly home.

Buy vs. Carry Mismatch

Rhode Island lets you purchase 7.7g of concentrate per transaction but only possess 5g in public. If you buy more than 5g, go straight home. Getting stopped in public with 7.7g of concentrate technically exceeds the public carry limit.

Medical Patient Possession Limits

Registered medical marijuana patients in Rhode Island receive significantly higher allotments:

Category Limit
Possession per 15-day period 2.5 ounces
Home cultivation (with plant tags) 12 mature + 12 immature plants

Medical patients must carry their valid Rhode Island medical marijuana card and a government-issued photo ID. The 15-day purchase cycle is tracked through the state's compassion center point-of-sale system.

Recreational vs. Medical: Side-by-Side

Feature Recreational Medical
Public carry (flower) 1 oz 2.5 oz per 15 days
Home storage 10 oz No separate cap specified
Home cultivation 3 mature + 3 immature 12 mature + 12 immature (with plant tags)
Tax rate 20% (10% excise + 7% sales + 3% local) Exempt from excise tax
Employment protection Yes (off-duty use) Yes (patient status)
DUI defense None (zero-tolerance per se) Exempt from metabolite-only charges

Adult Sharing Is Legal

Rhode Island law permits adults 21+ to share cannabis with other adults, provided that no money, goods, or services are exchanged. You can pass a joint at a private gathering or give a friend some flower. But any exchange of compensation crosses into unlicensed distribution territory.

Home Storage Rules

The 10-ounce home storage limit comes with requirements:

  • Cannabis must be stored in a secure, locked area not accessible to persons under 21.
  • The storage area should not be visible from any public area or neighboring property.
  • Harvest from home-grown plants counts toward the 10-ounce storage limit.

Failure to properly secure home-stored cannabis can result in civil penalties, especially if minors gain access.
